    Mecklenburg County Count Update

    2,784 Homeless as of 6.30.2024

According to Mecklenburg Housing Data as of June 30th there are 2,784 people experiencing homelessness in Charlotte-Mecklenburg. This number is continuing grow- in fact in June of 2023 number was 2,704.

2,784 individuals without a safe place to call home. 2,784 individuals who need affordable housing.

2,784 individuals that need access to supportive services.

It’s heartbreaking to think of the obstacles standing in their way. There is minimal affordable housing and access to that housing is extremely difficult to obtain. I think about the individuals struggling with multiple jobs, those who are trying to obtain work but their past doesn’t allow them, and those who are on waiting lists just hoping and praying to get called.

Then I get angry. Why in the grand scheme of life is it so difficult for individuals to get access to have a safe place to call home, the dignity of a new beginning, and the hope for a brighter future? We see the work of grassroots organizations pounding the pavement day in and day out trying to help not just 2,784 individuals, but anyone who needs it. We see these individuals trying to make it out of the cycle of homelessness.  And yet the number of homeless continues to go up while access to resources is going down.

Charlotte we have to step up and say enough is enough. These individuals are not just some number on a spreadsheet. These are friends, family members, someone’s mother, father, sister, brother, child the list goes on. These 2,784 individuals are HUMAN BEINGS! They all deserve a safe place to call home, the dignity of a new beginning, and the hope of a brighter future!

Good community housing programs have over a 97% housing stability rate.   Individuals who have been chronically homeless, but can get in, can sustain that housing.
